Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are a group of antidepressants that treat depression by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin - a neurotransmitter that maintains positive emotions - in the brain, thereby correcting a chemical imbalance. Examples of SSRIs include Paxil® and Prozac.

Side Effects

Side effects of SSRIs include:

  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Menstrual changes
  • Increased sexual interest (women)
  • Impotence
  • Decreased sexual interest (men)
  • Insomnia
  • Drowsiness
  • Tremors
  • Diarrhea
  • Mild mania (in patients with a genetic tendency)

Withdrawal

Research has indicated that a certain percentage of patients who stop taking SSRIs may experience withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms occur in 20-50% of all patients who stop taking Paxil®.
